Canfor Pulp makes first Feb. 1 pulp price hike announcement - up US$30/tonne for North America, Asia

LOS ANGELES, January 15, 2010 (Forestweb) — Canfor Pulp LP today announced US$30 per tonne list price increases for North America and Asia, effective Feb. 1.

This will bring its list prices of northern bleached softwood kraft pulp (NBSK) to $880/tonne in North America and, in China, to $750/tonne for commodity grade and $760/tonne for reinforcing grade.

This is the first known Feb. 1 pulp price increase announcement. It follows Jan. 1 $20/tonne NBSK increases in the two regions.

Other producers, of both softwood and hardwood pulp, have also been saying that they are likely to announce Feb. 1 price increases, probably next week. And the increases are expected for all markets around the world.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based Canfor Pulp markets 1.6 million tonnes of pulp, most of which is NBSK. The mix also includes 120,000 tonnes/year of unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) and 215,000 tonnes/year of bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP).
